Inaugural dissertation by Stephanie Angloher : A comparative study of sound aesthetics and didactic communication.

The existence of various clarinet systems has been the subject of intensive discussions in the professional world for years about the advantages and disadvantages of the different handle systems and their tonal properties. Against this background, the present study offers a comprehensive comparison of the German and French clarinets, which extends from the historical development to instrumental differences and acoustic properties to sound-aesthetic aspects.

This comparison is supplemented by an empirical investigation into the perceptibility of sonic system features. The result shows that it is not different instruments, but cultural factors and individual expressions that determine the sound and effect of the instrumental playing.
