Definition
The necks, or bocals (French), are the barrels of the lower clarinets. They differ in length, bore size, and wall thickness as well as surface treatment.



Shapes
Necks not only influence the sound and intonation of an instrument but the playing comfort. Necks are available with different curves and angles and can be modified. The angle of the neck will have an important influence on the way you position the mouthpiece in your mouth.



Material
They are usually available in either nickel or silver-plating. We also offer them with heavy copper, gold or black nickel plating. The different plating produces different sound spectrums. Lately, some necks are also available in wood.



Fit
An important detail that is often overlooked is the fit of the neck into the mouthpiece and instrument. It should be very tight to give the best projection and stability when playing. Most necks will be just one piece. Bocals for low C instruments are usually adjustable in length.



Enhancement
Another option is a "stabilizer", an extra piece of metal soldered onto the neck to enhance its stability. It will often enhance the projection and make overall playing easier.
